Workshop 1 - Utilising GPS in Network RTK mode for Boundary SurveysAisling Hotel, Dublin 7 (beside Heuston Station) Monday 28th September 2009 - 10am to 5pm (lunch included) The Topographic Survey Specification for Urban Projects published in May 2009 by the Quality Bus Network Project Office outlines a specification for high quality surveys in urban areas. A copy of the specification is available at http://www.dublincity.ie/RoadsandTraffic/QBNProjectOffice/Pages/QBNProjectOffice.aspx. It specifies the need for very accurate survey control on which to base the topographic survey, but then states that GPS in network RTK mode cannot be used for the topographic survey because: - The GPS measurements are not connected to the survey control since each GPS observation is independent;
- The GPS measurements are not consistent enough to supply the accuracy tolerances specified when surveying single points;
- The network corrections supplied for each of the GPS observation are not saved which precludes re-computation of the original observations to prove and certify the accuracy.
In theory then the use of GPS in network RTK mode for boundary surveys to achieve the standards proposed by the IIS Green Paper should also be precluded for these very same reasons. Why provide a high quality baseline on which to base the boundary survey if the survey measurements are not connected to it? All cadastral surveyors worldwide are faced with this dilemma, so there is a need to develop new survey procedures which exploit the use of these modern surveying technologies. This workshop aims to examine the characteristics of these new technologies, the accuracies that can be achieved, new developments expected, the difficulties users can meet in the field, and investigate viable survey procedures to permit their use in association with survey control. A number of eminent international speakers will participate in the workshop. Attendance at Workshops: Maximum participation at each of these workshops is 30 people, so attendance will be at ‘first come first served’ basis. Therefore members are requested to book their places with Vera ASAP

. The workshops will be CPD accredited (2 CPD points - certification supplied) by the IIS and mutual accreditation is also being sought from the ICES, SCS and EI. The cost of attendance per workshop is €100 (€50 for IIS members). Paddy Prendergast Chair - IIS Commission on Land Registration
